What are the cultural, ethical, research, legal and scientific (CERLS) issues that are inherent in research on rongoā Māori plants and healing?

This summer internship joins and contributes to a research project on Māori whānau experience of Hospital Transfers by being involved and undertaking literature review, in depth analysis of interview data and considering and reflecting on their research and the research impact and contribution.

Explore key components of a child health consultation with te reo speaking tamariki and whānau in a primary health care setting. Specific objectives include:

This project examined the economic costs of health inequities between Māori and non-Māori adults in Aotearoa. Using both quantitative data and Māori lived experiences, it highlighted the significant social, economic, and health impacts of these disparities. The research aims to inform targeted policies to reduce inequities, strengthen Māori health outcomes, and build capacity in Māori-led health economics research.

In 2012, a wave of youth suicides in Northland featured far too many of Ngātiwai descent. 19 people under 25 years took their own lives, a huge increase from 5 the year before (Penney & Dobbs, 2014). Suicide rates for Māori youth in Te Tai Tokerau, including the Ngātiwai rohe, is therefore a major public health issue.

While all hospitalisations can be stressful for patients and their whānau, hospitalisations involving transfers away from home can be even more so and can present unique issues in terms of how whānau negotiate distance, unfamiliarity, active engagement and help-seeking.
