Project supervisor: Associate Professor Karyn Paringatai
Institution: Te Whare Wānanga o Ōtākou
Raumati intern: Te Hau Ariki Gardiner (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāpuhi)
Project Summary: The primary purpose of the project is to assist in the co-development of eHealth initiatives in surgery that incorporate Māori cultural values and understandings of health and wellbeing, and design aesthetics and content that are engaging for Māori patients and allow them to correspond with healthcare providers.
The intern will be supervised by Associate Professor Karyn Paringatai (Te Tumu) and supported by Professor Jo Baxter (Otago Medical School), Dr Moea Nimmo (Surgical Registrar, Southland Hospital), Dr John Woodfield and Dr Kari Clifford (both from the Department of Surgical Sciences, Dunedin Hospital). The internship will contribute to a broader collaborative project between the Department of Surgical Sciences at the Otago Medical School and SHI Global (a New Zealand based health software company).
The raumati scholar will review current pre-and post-operative practices to understand how these address Māori cultural values and understandings and develop ways to better incorporate these to better support Māori health needs. The raumati intern will develop skills in research, analysis and design and writing skills, and expand their knowledge of digital health and health communication.
